Kitulo Plateau National Park
The garden of God
Overview
Africa's first national park created to protect flowers. For a few months each year the Kitulo Plateau turns into 400 square kilometres of orchids, and almost nobody comes to see it.
Locals call it Bustani ya Mungu — the Garden of God. Botanists, less romantically, call it one of the great floral spectacles of the tropics: over 350 vascular plant species including 45 varieties of terrestrial orchid, blooming together across high montane grassland from late November into April.
There are no big cats and no elephants here. Kitulo is for walkers, birders and botanists, and for travellers who have grown tired of measuring a day by how many predators they photographed.
The landscape
High rolling grassland between 2,600 and 3,000 metres, ringed by the peaks of the Kipengere, Poroto and Livingstone ranges.
