Indian Ocean Coast
Saadani National Park
Where the bush walks onto the beach
Overview
The only national park in East Africa with an Indian Ocean shoreline. Elephants leave tracks on the sand, green turtles nest on the same beach, and a boat safari up the Wami River finds hippo a kilometre from the surf.
Saadani should not really work, and yet it does. Savanna runs right to the high-tide line, so the same morning can hold a game drive for giraffe and buffalo, a river cruise past crocodiles, and an afternoon swim. Wildlife densities are lower than the great parks — this is not where you go for a big cat checklist.
What it offers instead is convenience and novelty: four hours from Dar es Salaam by road, or a short hop by air, making it the easiest bush-and-beach combination in the country and a favourite for families and short trips.
The landscape
Coastal savanna, palm groves and mangrove creeks meeting a long sweep of Indian Ocean beach, cut by the tidal Wami River.

Good to Know
Questions, answered
Honest answer: modest by Tanzanian standards. You will see giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck and often elephant, but not the density of Ruaha or the Serengeti. Come for the combination, not the numbers.
