Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route
Eight days, the best acclimatisation profile we run
The Journey
Overview
Lemosho approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote west, spending two days in genuine wilderness before joining the busier southern routes. The extra day over Machame matters: the eight-day profile has the highest summit success of anything we offer, and the scenery on the way in is the finest on the mountain.
Highlights
- Eight days on the mountain for maximum acclimatisation
- Quiet, remote first two days on the western approach
- Crossing the Shira Plateau at 3,800 m
- Barranco Wall and the southern glaciers
- Twice-daily health checks and experienced local crew

Day by Day
How the journey unfolds
Day 1
Arrive in Moshi
Airport pickup, hotel check-in, and a full briefing and gear check with your head guide.
Day 2
Londorossi → Mti Mkubwa
Drive round to the western side and walk into montane rainforest, camping among giant heather at 2,800 m. Colobus overhead and almost nobody else on the trail.
Day 3
Shira 1
Climb out of the forest onto the Shira Plateau with Kibo filling the horizon ahead. Camp at 3,500 m.
Day 4
Shira 2
A gentle day crossing the plateau — deliberately short, to let your body catch up. Afternoon acclimatisation walk to a nearby ridge.
Day 5
Lava Tower → Barranco
The key climb-high-sleep-low day: up to the 4,600 m Lava Tower for lunch, then down into the Barranco Valley at 3,960 m among the giant groundsels.
Day 6
Barranco Wall → Karanga
A hands-on scramble up the Barranco Wall, easier than its reputation, then rolling ridges to Karanga Camp.
Day 7
Karanga → Barafu
A short morning to Barafu base camp at 4,673 m. Early dinner, kit check, and a few hours of sleep.
Day 8
Summit day
Away around midnight by headlamp, reaching Stella Point for sunrise and Uhuru Peak — 5,895 m — shortly after. A long descent to Mweka Camp.
Day 9
Descend & celebrate
A final forest walk to Mweka Gate, certificates handed out, then a shower and a celebration dinner in Moshi.

Good to Know
Questions, answered
Lemosho, if the budget and the days allow. The extra night and the quieter western approach both help — measurably so on summit night. Machame remains excellent and costs less.
