Kilimanjaro — Machame Route

Seven days to the roof of Africa

The Journey

Overview

The Machame route is Kilimanjaro's most scenically varied path — rainforest, the Shira Plateau, the great Barranco Wall and a moonlit push to Uhuru Peak. Our 7-day trekking profile (plus arrival and departure days) builds in the acclimatisation that makes the difference between turning back and standing on the summit.

Highlights

  • Climb high, sleep low acclimatisation profile
  • Experienced local mountain crew and quality equipment
  • Sunrise summit bid from Barafu Camp
  • Five climate zones in a single week
  • Full pre-trek briefing and gear check in Moshi

Day by Day

How the journey unfolds

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Moshi

Airport pickup, hotel check-in, and a thorough briefing and gear check with your head guide.

  2. Day 2

    Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Enter the rainforest at 1,800 m and climb steadily through moss-draped forest to camp at 3,000 m.

  3. Day 3

    Machame Camp → Shira Camp

Break out of the forest onto heather moorland with the first big views of Kibo. Camp on the Shira Plateau at 3,840 m.

  4. Day 4

    Lava Tower → Barranco

The key acclimatisation day: climb to the 4,600 m Lava Tower for lunch, then descend into the wild Barranco Valley to sleep at 3,960 m.

  5. Day 5

    Barranco Wall → Karanga

A hands-on scramble up the Barranco Wall — easier than it looks — followed by rolling ridges to Karanga Camp.

  6. Day 6

    Karanga → Barafu

A short morning to Barafu base camp at 4,673 m. Early dinner and a few hours of sleep before the summit push.

  7. Day 7

    Summit day

Departing around midnight, you climb by headlamp to Stella Point for sunrise, then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — 5,895 m. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp.

  8. Day 8

    Descend & celebrate

A final forest walk to Mweka Gate, certificates in hand, and a well-earned shower and celebration dinner in Moshi.

  9. Day 9

    Depart

Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport — or continue to a safari or Zanzibar with us.

Good to Know

Questions, answered

If you can comfortably walk 5–6 hours a day on hilly terrain, you can attempt Kilimanjaro. Summit night is the crux — long, cold and slow — and mental resilience counts as much as fitness.

Ready when you are.
