Mikumi's Mkata floodplain is four hours from Dar es Salaam and holds lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and zebra in open country that photographs beautifully. Day by Day

How the journey unfolds

Day 1

Dar es Salaam → Mikumi

Leave the city after an early breakfast and drive up through the Uluguru foothills, arriving in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive across the floodplain.

Day 2

Full day in the park

Dawn drive while the plains are still cool and the predators are active, a siesta through the heat, then out again until the gates close at sunset.

Day 3

Morning drive & return

A final drive on the way out of the park, lunch en route, and back into Dar es Salaam by early evening.

Questions, answered

Mikumi is reliable for giraffe, zebra, buffalo, elephant and impala, and lion sightings are common on the floodplain. Leopard and wild dog are possible but lucky. For a weekend, it delivers.
